in this terrifying world you continuously have the power to offer someone else a little relief . why would you withhold that. do you remember what a little relief feels like? it feels like a lot

excuse me? are you suggesting i frolic directly into someone’s emotional space and assume what brings them relief, potentially causing more stress? are you encouraging people to reach past their own boundaries to help, increasing net suffering if it costs more than the other gains? surely not; that would be advocating for emotional self-harm.

this is a post about the woman who waived my late fee at the bank .

good for you, good for her, the wording on the initial post feels closer to blaming people who don’t reach out than celebrating those who do by a large enough margin that i feel the need to hit back

you are a tar pit

A thing I love in romance is when they’re NOT soulmates. When they were not made for each other or meant to find each other in every possible world. When they’re two people who have lived their life and changed because of it and happened to find each other at a point where that meeting could be meaningful and worth building from. I love romance that doesn’t feel like the universe was meant to bring these two people together, but instead what a beautiful coincidence that they are here now and something beautiful can come from it

I’m starting to find evidence on twitter of antis encouraging each other to shun friends and family for not being one of them and I am deeply concerned. This is some cult shit.

image

“should I shun my friend for being proship even though they’re my only irl friend?”

image
image
image

“Should I shun my mother for being proship?”

The answer to both of these is GET HELP. You are being brainwashed into thinking that your friends and family are dangerous when you know that they wouldn’t hurt anyone. See a therapist, take some time off the internet, reevaluate your situation. Fiction does not take precedence over your loved ones.

I’m tagging this with “antis please interact” because I think they need to see this too, and hopefully it helps someone. Your loved ones are not dangerous because of their taste in fiction.

It’s really disturbing how we are watching a really unhealthy, purity obsessed minority become way, way too vocal. Are they becoming a majority among young fans, or are they just drowning out the other opinions?

Do these CHILDREN realize they are parroting the conservative “think of the children” dog whistle? Do they not realize that the same irrational fear of fiction negatively affecting reality is the same logic these book banning bigoted assholes are using to justify pulling books with LGBTQ characters? Because they are scared their straight child will become gay from reading a book! Because we all know THAT’S how that works, right?!

If reading books with queer characters doesn’t make you gay, why the fuck would reading a fanfic with an underage character make you a pedophile? Did watching Game of Thrones make everyone suddenly cool with incest? No! Nothing changed!

Maybe these kids are confusing the concept of Representation Matters, where telling minority focused stories can be beneficial for that minority. Except they can’t tell the difference between Watsonian and Doylelist analysis of a story. They can’t differentiate between what the author is saying, what the setting is saying, and what a character is saying. So they think any mention of these “bad” things is bad because clearly it is condoning the behavior! Because video games DEFINITELY made me think murder is okay in real life, so I will definitely start grooming children because I read a teacher/student high school AU!

ITS’ THE SAME FAULTY LOGIC!!

1984, Wuthering Heights, Tess of the D'Ubervilles, Lolita, The Collector… Plenty of literary classics have scenes with rape, incest, or pedophilia. You cannot possibly think that every author and every literary critic or educator is a rapist or a pedophile. It really is just fiction. Reading these books does not make you a bad person, or else we’d have so many more crimes.

you guys i am so in love with this fandom. you people read 2 whole books about a solar system with 9 planets that is stated to have been the cradle of humanity and you are still surprised when it turns out that it’s like, THE solar system.

Just fully no thoughts, head empty, marinating in the lesbianism of the situation without a single neuron firing. i salute your dedication

[ID: Image one is a screenshot of a post by OP which us a meme that reads: which is more lesbian? [Lesbian flag] every lesbian on earth or [The covers of “Gideon the Ninth” and Harrow the Ninth"] whatever the fuck is going on on pluto.“ It’s captioned “idk what they put in the water over there.” Following is a collection of tags that read:

  • #THESE BOOKS TAKE PLACE ON PLUTO????? (caps: these books take place on Pluto???)
  • #wh… why did it never occur to me that the ninth house could literally just be Pluto
  • #WAIT A FUCKING SECOND (caps: Wait a fucking second) #they r the same solar system planets????? :0 (surprised emoticon) #I’m already in htn n I didnt know that…
  • #OH ITS PLUTO THAT MAKES SENSE (caps: Oh its Pluto that makes sense). End ID]

I know people on tumblr looove stories of underwater cave diving, but I haven’t seen anyone talk about nitrogen narcosis aka “raptures of the deep

basically when you want to get your advanced scuba certification (allowing you to go more than 60 feet deep) you have to undergo a very specific test: your instructor takes you down past the 60+ foot threshold, and she brings a little underwater white board with her.

she writes a very basic math problem on that board. 6 + 15. she shows it to you, and you have to solve it.

if you can solve it, you’re good. that is the hardest part of the test.

because here’s what happens: there is a subset of people, and we have no real idea why this happens only to them, who lose their minds at depth. they’re not dying, they’re not running out of oxygen, they just completely lose their sense of identity when deep in the sea.

a woman on a dive my instructor led once vanished during the course of the excursion. they were diving near this dropoff point, beyond which the depth exceeded 60 feet and he’d told them not to go down that way. the instructor made his way over to look for her and found a guy sitting at the edge of the dropoff (an underwater cliff situation) just staring down into the dark. the guy is okay, but he’s at the threshold, spacing out, and mentally difficult to reach. they try to communicate, and finally the guy just points down into the dark, knowing he can’t go down there, but he saw the woman go.

instructor is deep water certified and he goes down. he shines his light into the dark, down onto the seafloor which is at 90 feet below the surface. he sees the woman, her arms locked to her sides, moving like a fish, swimming furiously in circles in the pitch black.

she is hard to catch but he stops her and checks her remaining oxygen: she is almost out, on account of swimming a marathon for absolutely no reason. he is able to drag her back up, get her to a stable depth to decompress, and bring her to the surface safely.

when their masks are off and he finally asks her what happened, and why was she swimming like that, she says she fully, 100% believed she was a mermaid, had always been a mermaid, and something was hunting her in the dark 👍

👍

Why don't zoomers use emulators or torrent things anymore? A good amount of zoomers could probably figure it out with time but people either just buy digital games or use pirate streaming sites.

I think there’s a certain technical knowledge gap between people whose first computer was a Windows XP machine and people whose first computer was an iPad. On a mobile device like that, even the filesystem is abstracted away from you, so if that’s all you’ve used your whole life, you may not know what a “folder” or a “file” is. If you don’t know what those are, how could you be expected to understand something like torrenting? Then add the layer of a VPN, which is basically a necessity when torrenting lest you get a love letter from your ISP, and I’d say it’s all but impenetrable for our strawman.

Idk man. Torrenting isn’t hard, but there’s a barrier to entry that a lot of people who grew up using smartphones aren’t equipped to handle. There are plenty of millenials who don’t know how to torrent either, and plenty of zoomers who do. It’s just a technological generation gap.

a big reason is that zoomers are terrified of “viruses”, an amorphous threat they’ve heard about their whole lives in association with piracy but don’t actually understand. I run a discord specifically geared towards helping newbies learn to pirate things and generally be more independent on their devices and this is usually the first bit of misinformation (that viruses are omnipresent and all-powerful and impossible to avoid) we have to debunk for people.

in working with people on this project I’m finding that fear in general is a major generational culture difference. zoomers are terrified of everything. they have a good reason to be, don’t get me wrong, but most of them have been taught no coping skills or resiliency whatsoever, they’ve just been raised to be scared of everything all the time without any lessons on how to do things that scare them and manage risk, and a lot of them only have avoidance as a coping tool.

they especially have not been taught to critically think about supposed threats or research the truth about rumors or stories they’ve heard, and “researching” anything on Google is now such a dicey proposition I’m not sure you can even really debunk things for yourself anymore unless you’ve already grown up without Web 3. this isn’t their fault, their parents and teachers have done this intentionally, but it really makes me angry that so many young people are being needlessly made to suffer like this.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that so much zoomer horror, especially creepypasta, is based on the ideas of ghosts in the machine, malevolent third party or “rogue” software, mind controlling corporate software projects, etc. millennials wrote most of these stories but zoomers are the primary audience and their consumption of the genre reflects their anxieties about technology

A lot of it is intentional. Apple chose to obfuscate its tech; even casual reverse engineering is considered a TOS violation. Finder made it possible to use a Mac without knowing where or how files were physically stored.

Windows (starting with Win8) isn’t much better and has been getting progressively worse, blurring the line between files stored on your physical PC and some nebulously defined cloud.

They want you weak and ignorant. Part of the business plan.

Ignorance protects corporations in numerous ways:

  • can’t pirate software if you don’t understand how it works
  • can’t steal movies or music either
  • instead of fixing your stuff when it gets old and/or broken, time to buy a new one
  • customers without technical knowledge are forced to rely on AppleCare or the Genius Bar or Geek Squad

And now half the planet is losing its damn mind because they only know how to use twitter, and twitter is going down.

What able bodied authors think I, an amputee and a wheelchair user, would want in a scifi setting:

  • Tech that can regenerate my old meat legs.
  • Robot legs that work just like meat legs and are functionally just meat legs but robot
  • Literally anything that would mean I don’t have to use a wheelchair.
  • If I do need to use a wheelchair, make it fly or able to “walk me” upstairs

What I actually want:

  • Prosthetic covers that can change colour because I’m too indecisive to pick one colour/pattern for the next 5+ years.
  • A leg that I can turn off (seriously, my above knee prosthetic has no off switch… just… why?)
  • A leg that won’t have to get refitted every time I gain or loose weight.
  • A wheelchair that I can teleport to me and legs I can teleport away when I’m too tierd to keep walking. And vice versa.
  • In that same vein, legs I can teleport on instead of having to fiddle around with the sockets for half an hour.
  • Prosthetic feet that don’t require me to wear shoes. F*ck shoes.
  • Actually accessible architecture, which means when I do want to use my wheelchair, it’s not an issue.
  • Prosthetic legs with dragon-claw feet instead of boring human feet or just digigrade prosthetics that are just as functional as normal human-shaped ones.
  • A manual wheelchair with the option to lift my seat up like those scissor-lift things so I’m not eye-level with everyone’s butt on public transport/so I can reach the top shelf by myself.
  • A prosthetic foot that lights up when it hits the ground like those children’s shoes.

bloggingboutburgers:

Quick reminder since apparently it bears reminding in both directions: if bigoted people, closed-minded people overall, or your own internalized insecurities misinterpret a queer person’s message in a way that hurts/endangers you, yeah, it sucks, but it’s not the fault of the queer person in question, nor should it be a reason for them to silence themselves. They’re probably as hurt/pissed as you are that someone misinterpreted and misused their message to do harm.

Of course sadly there’ll still be queer people that actually DO mean harm and dismissal to other queer people – I ain’t speaking for those and it’s not the best way to ensure their and others’ wellbeing imo. I’m just saying – not all people will be like that. That’s what I want to believe. So hopefully let’s not put everyone in the same bag, keep supporting each other, WHILE allowing each other to advocate for our own visibility, without having to self-erase or self-censor to accomodate to what haters might say.

It’ll be tougher this way, maybe, because humans seem to like to draw extreme conclusions very quick, but I don’t believe there’s any better way for us all to be alright and stay alright on the long run.
